Great to see our paper on the UK fiscal architecture out just as a new perceived fiscal crisis emerges. Our paper shows how the UK government spends money into existence and withdraws it temporarily again with gilts to support monetary policy and provide safe assets for the non-bank private sector.

A clever and critical take on the abundance proposition by Sandeep Vaheesan - a must read focusing in on the limits of the private sector.

Now that's a banger co-lab: VoltsXDoctorow.
Great listen - we should definitely avoid the enshittification of the growing amount of clean-energy tech in our daily lives.
Today on Volts: I talk with the estimable Cory Doctorow about enshittification (the inevitable rot & customer exploitation of tech platforms) and how it might manifest in clean-energy tech, which will soon be running our vehicles and homes. Much to worry about!

Can we avoid the enshittification of clean-energy tech?
Cory Doctorow describes how software platform technologies go wrong and what it might look like when our homes and vehicles are on those platforms.

Indicative planning can mitigate the climate crisis. But under capitalism it only happens when the stakes are sky-high: wars, energy crises, post-war rubble. Jacob Hasselbalch and I took a dive in the topic. #GreenState #PoliticalEconomy #ClimateAction www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Green economic planning for rapid decarbonisation

Five months paternity leave ahead - please hook me up with your favourite audiobooks on anything political economy. Last time around Thompson’s Disorder was a hit. What’s next?

So you got the plan, but have you got the state capacity? (To misquote Shania Twain)

Looking forward to presenting this paper on state capacity for decarbonisation next week at @mpimmg.bsky.social's conf on 'The Fragmentary State'

Paper has been a v long time coming but I think it's nearly there 🙏

Global klimaretfærdighed tilsiger selvklart mere markante reduktioner.

it's worse than a subsidy! they want to appropriate a quarter trillion dollars' worth of US public assets and give them to a tiny handful of bitcoin whales!! it's highway robbery!!! prospect.org/power/2024-1...
Let’s be real: This is a subsidy. The people who hate public spending have invented a massive government subsidy for a technology that has still yet to find a broad-based practical application 15 years after its debut
Crypto leaders press Trump to create federal bitcoin reserve
President-elect Donald Trump has expressed support for the bitcoin idea, which some economists see as inflationary and costly, depending on its implementation.

That rule I put in the constitution and that has wreaked devastation? It’s “still right and proper”. But do tweak it a little. Should be fine. Let’s not think too hard about it. Let alone assume responsibility for a catastrophic error, haha no.
