That's not human nature

The appreciation of beauty, curiosity, and wonder is human nature

Our social systems suppress that human nature and encourage hate and negativity

Too many peoples' lives have been made depressing

That's where the negativity comes from

Human nature is good, actually

Online Left picked up on this a long time ago

Online Right circa 2014 was talking about intentionally moving the Overton Window using memes & dogwhistles

It's just part of the broader trend: conversations that previously used to happen in niche spaces are now more visible, probably due to Twitter

they've been working on this for a long time

Who is saying this and in what context?
November 13, 2025 at 12:37 PM
No they just consider the presence of anyone who is not white to be 'mass uncontrolled immigration'.

That phrase is just a euphemism for 'undesirables'.

It's clearly just thinly veiled ethnonationalism

The fact that social media caused this does not mean standard pre-iphone establishment politics were good or sustainable.

They created the conditions for this, after all

In a different world, social media could have been immensely positive

Its down to the incentives social media companies face

I think there's something to be learned from how the right shunned things like the Met Gala,

endorsements from celebs and being associated with those institutions is now a negative because they evoke the 'smug out of touch elite' and people now broadly have 0 respect for the former cultural elite

Yeah that's what scares me the most about the 'net contributor' discourse.

If people start seeing everything from that lens, and it becomes accepted as 'common sense', things can get really dark.
October 22, 2025 at 4:18 PM
I fear this 'prove you're a net contributer' thing is going to be a really dark feature of life in Britain for many people in the near future.

And looking at it from a purely balance sheet perspective, not taking into account second order contributions, is also economically daft

There is no public support *yet*

Public support for policies isn't a natural, uncontrollable phenomenon

The people who want this policy will start manufacturing support

All it takes is a year or two of reporting every crime or misdeed by someone on ILR as front page news and the support will come

Just noticed something:

Exemptions to Data Protection Act - what's that about? They want to be able to dox migrants legally? Sell data to friends in Silicon Valley? (thought they were doing that already).
October 22, 2025 at 1:23 PM
Look to America

'What kind of British are you?'
October 22, 2025 at 1:19 PM
Yeah they've laid groundwork for revoking citizenship already, I fear people are overrating the extent to which Naturalised Citizens will be off limits in the next few years

Already lots of talk of 'paper Brits'

Get citizenship by all means but I'm not so sure it means you're out of the crosshairs

The age of 'quiet deliverism' as a political strategy is over, social media killed it.

You need to be constantly arguing, attacking, campaigning to dominate the news cycle, otherwise it doesn't matter what you deliver - see Biden.

So yes, Starmer needs to be pushing back.
October 22, 2025 at 1:07 PM
Seriously, 'international reputation' is your angle?

1. Ppl who support this do not care about reputation/soft power because no one in the public discourse is providing a coherent argument for why it matters

2. Other countries are moving in the same direction

It's not 2014 anymore, please wake up
October 22, 2025 at 1:02 PM
This will work for a while, but never forget the anti-Polish rhetoric of the Brexit campaign

That 'Okay' can turn into 'Not Okay' very quickly

Not to mention the cases of white Europeans getting kidnapped by ICE in the US
October 22, 2025 at 12:56 PM
Gov and opposition + second opposition, all together.
October 22, 2025 at 12:52 PM
It's not collective cowardice, it's a concerted push by a very cohesive movement

The ones who look like cowards are just hedging their bets so they can go back if the push fails

If the push succeeds, they'll say they were always in favour of it - and will likely be telling the truth in saying so
October 22, 2025 at 12:46 PM
Oh they want to promote it - they just know it's a bit too early.

Takes a while for sentiments to be planted, then they need to be left to simmer for a bit.

Once enough of the public sees ILR as the root of their problems (currently it's asylum),

then they'll promote it
October 22, 2025 at 12:41 PM
It's always in flux, the right intentionally do not draw any clear lines, gives them maximum rhetorical flexibility as they work towards their aims

I think their current aim is the Dubai model where no one can ever be settled

The further right are obviously laying foundations to go even further
October 22, 2025 at 12:24 PM
They're workshopping this on Twitter already

I think they're struggling to find enough examples to fit the narrative. In Lam's replies, there's talk of going through records of medical tribunals to find misconduct cases

Lam's already posted a couple of cases of immigrant doctors doing bad things
October 22, 2025 at 12:18 PM
Once enough of the public has been primed to associate legal immigrants on ILR with bad things, then they'll talk about it.

It's very obvious once you update your model of the right to view them as a cohesive group acting strategically as agents working towards objectives.
October 22, 2025 at 12:16 PM
big voices on the right understand it's too early - they havent manufactured enough consent for the public.

Their propaganda efforts for the past year have been focused on asylum, not ILR. Just wait till the Telegraph etc start reporting on every crime committed by someone on ILR as frontpage news.
