The crux of it is that blaming nostalgia as a whole, as Will does, is incorrect.
Real issue is which groups people identify with & how they see the group's status relative to the past
I don't know of any papers that have looked at left's nostalgia, but likely they identify with working class etc

Most European countries have gun control and haven't had coups
Meanwhile the countries with the most coups all have/had easy access to guns
