Bittersweet to say farewell to Emmanuel Akoto, who defended his MS thesis & graduated this summer.

Emmanuel made outstanding contributions to several projects & contributed to the growth & well-being of others around him.

I'm excited to watch him continue to grow in his new role at Eli Lilly!

Very thoughtful piece by @youngshull.bsky.social about our misplaced anxieties about the place of AI in educational settings (and the human experience).

This is a very good idea!

Here's a prototype, thanks to ChatGPT :)

Holy pricey petri dish!

Last year, I purchased a case of 500 FisherBrand petri dishes for $60/case.

Today they are $232.

Is this tariff pricing?

Where do people buy their petri dishes for microbiology?

I could not be prouder of Emmanuel Akoto, who successfully defended his master's thesis today!

Emmanuel did a great job presenting his excellent research about how cells destroy proteins that clog ER translocons, a process that may become overwhelmed, contributing to pancreatic failure, in diabetes

The @inacademyofscience.bsky.social mtg is always so rewarding!

Great opp. for very-early career scientists to share their work & engage w/ broader sci community.

My entire team gets so much out of it! MS students Emmanuel & James, UGs Katrina & LiLi, & lab alum Kieran gave awesome presentations.

Excited to share our latest work!

We found kinesin Kar3 is required for ER protein quality control.

This 10-yr project involved 78 students, including undergrad & master's students in my lab & students enrolled in CURE I helped design, & 2 excellent colleagues.

Congrats to the Fall '24 #Cellebration of Learning Club!

These excellent BSU Cell Biology students earned 90% or higher on 10 assignments!

It was a privilege to explore the molecules & principles underlying cell function w/ these budding scientists & all of the students in our Cell Biology class!

Wonderful hosting Dr. Becca Davidson (postdoc in Soleimanpour lab at UMich) in the Ball State Biology Dept!

Becca shared their exciting work on mitoDNA in diabetes in our department seminar & delivered a guest lecture in my Cell Bio course! My students & colleagues got so much out of their visit!

A super fun holiday party with the #RubensteinLab and friends. Pitch-in dinner and desserts were delicious, and white-elephant gift exchange was epic.

I'm very happy to share our new microPublication!

Beyond revealing methionine to be a novel regulator of quality control at the yeast ER translocon, our results urge caution when working with auxotrophic strains - those mutations may not be so innocent!
