Would be great if @NHSE_WTE & @DHSCgovuk would act with integrity now and establish security for doctors this summer and onwards

I encourage doctors to again prepare to band together and fight for our profession & especially our most hard hit colleagues

Studying medicine in the UK requires personal, financial, professional sacrifices, taken under the premise of reasonable chance to progress to consultant/GP

Yet @NHSEWTE hold data showing career progression may stall or worse, halt, while still pushing the illusion of stability

This poses the question of what model of healthcare delivery our policy makers are pushing with

A concerted effort to increase number of SHO level doctors (+ effort to show equivalence from non doctors)

Without any similar effort to allow reasonable progression to expert level

We do not have enough experienced doctors to deliver high quality healthcare

And simultaneously blame funding for not training more

But have enough funding for expansion of more expensive per output aspects of healthcare delivery (let alone safety/risk profile)

With more reports of funding cut for consultant posts, this workforce failure will only hasten the exodus of doctors from UK medicine

A strategy reliant on excessive import/export of doctors is shortsighted as churn is inefficient and we know IMGs leave too

Worse now, doctors are fearing widespread unemployment this summer

FY2s not immediately entering training isn’t new; has been rising over last decade

But saturation of fellow posts & lack of locum IS new, leading to prospect of no reasonable job opportunities within UK medicine

We know automatic career progression in medicine is false, yet assumed by external bodies e.g media/govt

It was used against us in pay campaign to justify lower pay for doctors & even argue MAPs, ‘lacking career progression’ should start on higher pay (argument with many flaws)

To recap:

1️⃣ Compare your payslip to what you should expect

2️⃣ Ask your employer for a detailed breakdown of your payslip - it’s their duty to explain

3️⃣ Escalate to a rep/ IRO if you notice an issue

4️⃣ Challenge/ organise to take action if your employer has underpaid
