Architecture person. Can't stop thinking about the Las Vegas Sphere. Can't stop listening to the Grateful Dead.
Do any of my beautiful and insightful followers have a copy of this on their bookshelf?

Charles Barnard, ‘The Magic Sign’ (ST Publications, 1993)

would reward you handsomely if you could scan or loan it to me for a spell

the symbolic and cultural significance we used to attach to works of architecture. (Blunt, imperfect summary!)

A few other inspirations for the interior:

+ Pamela Colman Smith's iconic drawings for the Rider-Waite Tarot deck

+ 17th century German woodcuts of astronomical phenomena

+ A sequence for the Dead & Co Sphere shows, produced by Treatment Studio with Art & Graft.

I was laying out a lot of the interior at the same time as writing about Phish's April '24 shows at Sphere, specifically the nod to KF Schinkel's background designs for an 1815 production of The Magic Flute.

That stuff certainly influenced the lunar phase part of the calendar.

The interior has some more traditional calendar-type stuff like dates arrayed monthly, phases of the moon, and information about astrological signs, eclipses, equinoxes and solstices.

I should note that this part is conceptually indebted to a map produced by Buckminster Fuller and Shoji Sadao, produced in several editions throughout the mid 20th century. (A friend of mine has a print of this hanging in his apartment and it looks gorgeous.)

As a flat piece, the unfolded 'globe' looks a bit like this:

The calendar in its 'assembled' state is about 12" in diameter, assembled from 20 or so pieces of cut and folded paper.

The outside works as a sort of globe. You can set it on your desk to demonstrate your worldliness, a la this 17th c. painting by Carstian Luyckx

Had a few big life updates at the end of last year and beginning of this one. Things are good but the calendar slipped to the backburner for a while.

April 1 seems like as good a day as any to dust it off and share it with folks.

All of which is to say: check this out.

Longtime followers will know I have a fascination with the Populous-designed Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2025 calendar is "inspired by" or "about" that building.

There's a Rhino file on my desktop with about a dozen iterations--different scales, different methods of splitting a circle, different approaches to translating between 2D and 3D space. This was a fun way to work, but was occasionally slow and repetitive!

I got a pretty good start on things last fall. Made a bunch of mockups and test prints. Worked through some slightly tedious geometry here and there.

For a few years now I've been making little calendars as fun little side projects. I've mailed them to friends and made them available as print-on-demand objects. It's a not-too-serious way to pass the time and take stock of what's on my mind each November/December.

I want to share something I’ve been working on for a little bit!

Trying to find pictures of the unbuilt Autoworld stuff I also came across this Emirates National Automobile Museum in Abu Dhabi. Pyramid with Orb-trailer parked out front:

I like this IKEA UTSÅDD collection which asks "what if Superstudio Quaderna furniture but dog toys?"

A neat project would be making measured drawings of a bunch of notable music venues and recording studios a la Rhona Bitner’s photo book “Listen”

I know we've technically crossed the threshold into 2025. The calendar is almost finished.
