🌱It will freeze next week so I’m probably seeing the last of the flowers now. For #magentaMonday I offer a nearly-magenta pelargonium, some Crystal Palace lobelia grown from Dutch seeds started this spring, a drift of asters, and a last hurrah of the season from the beauteous Louise Clements rose.
A deep crimson/magenta pelargonium in a pot outside, with healthy dark green leaves. Thus was a cutting from another plant that has taken root and prospered. Doesn’t always happen that way! A trail of lobelia on the side of a plant stand, accompanied by snapdragons that aren’t flowering right now but look otherwise good. A section of a large pinkish-purple aster if full flower. I need to be careful about planting these “native plants” because they have huge growth advantages and take over when given a chance! A gorgeous rose bush in afternoon sun, with five bright golden orange blossoms.

#sixonsaturday 🌱🎃🧡 Anniversary weekend with all the harvest rainbow colors: asters, dahlias, roses on repeat bloom, gourds, long shadows and turning leaves. Long live Patrick O’Connell and his dreamlike restaurant in Washington, Virginia!

A visit to the Jamestown settlement re-creation
Demonstration of surgical tools from the early 1600s. The re-enactor is sitting at a table with a green baize-lined box containing various instruments for dealing with tooth extraction, musket ball removal, fecal disimpaction, trephination etc. A full-size recreation of the Godspeed sailing ship that brought the first colonists to Jamestown. The boat is docking in a calm backwater with dense tree growth on the shore beyond. A cannon on wheels sits in front of a pair of half-timbered houses with thatched roofs reminiscent of villages in rural England. A re-enactor demonstrates various kinds of baked goods being made in a stone oven.

Beautiful day yesterday in Colonial Williamsburg-great venue for the annual meeting of the American Clinical and Climatological Association🧪. A fascinating slate of talks in store!
A re-enactor demonstrates a spinning wheel for wool. Colonial law forbade the importation of sheep for wool, only for food. So this was a felonious activity at the time. Under a cloudless blue sky, a buggy is drawn by a brace of chestnut horses with matching white blazes, along the Duke of Gloucestershire street. The Bruton Church, a brick colonial structure with a pretty white steeple dating from 1716, with a low brick wall enclosing the church and surrounding yard. A plaque on the church wall commemorating the first representative assembly to be held in America, which occurred in the church at Jamestown about 5 miles from here on July 30, 1619.

🌱Blowsy October in my shockingly overgrown garden garden. Dahlias and roses competing for physical supremacy. Volunteer tomatoes and great lobelias growing as if tomorrow never comes. A single aster from a 1-quart pot spreads over 4 square meters. And these beautiful blossoms:
A “Mystery Day” dahlia opens on a cloudy day amidst a crowd of stalks and support posts. She is a dark crimson “dinnerplate”with white-tipped petals. A cluster of blue-purple heliotrope flowers against their deep green rugose foliage, moist with rain. The dauntless “Eustacia Vye” rose showing off a beautifully quartered multiply double blossom that is light pink on the edges, grading to a center of warm peachy-pink. Against the open flower is a large bud about to open. A vigorous orange puffball dahlia crowds up against and gets support from the previously mentioned Eustacia Vye rose. The background is a row of several types of arborvitae barely restrained by a fence. Who knew, in the middle of summer, that fall would be this exuberant?

🌱beautiful dahlias and roses in front of a lovely icon representing the church of St John on Patmos, where I took this photo. Maybe locally grown, or brought by pilgrims- Patmos has sufficient water and loads of sun.

🌱For #MagentaMonday, I present to you dahlias and impatiens in the gardens at Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul. A great place to reflect on the fall of empires and dynasties.
A clump of bright magenta blooms on a low hedge of dahlias. Another cluster of dahlias, these featuring large bright orange blooms with yellow-tipped petals. Single huge dahlia, lavender with some white streaks, on a low stalk in the palace garden. The daylight is subdued by a passing rain cloud. A view across a broad pond with a central marble sculpture of nesting swans that could be a fountain but isn’t presently. The pond is edged by impatiens in magenta and crimson, and its mirror-like surface reflects a bright blue sky and overhanging trees.

🌱Dahlias have such an amazing range of colors and sizes. Many are surprises when they finally bloom- this gorgeous one for example. I will have to label my tubers better this year when I dig them up. #orangeSun

🌱It’s”Lilac Time”! These glorious cream and lavender dahlias have been great performers since early August but are really showing off now.

🌱This flower arrangement has acquired some sort of personality – can’t quite put my finger on it

The two orange flowers are equally sized compact hemispheres and have dark centers, so they look like eyeballs or boobs. The purple ones flanking them are loose and slightly floppy. A single yellow dahlia rests on top like a hat.

🌱 a Monarch butterfly enjoying some Ageratum nectar. This time of year the pretty purple wildflower overruns every available corner of the garden and attracts all sorts of pollinators.
