1980. Touching nature inspires a lifelong connection.

In 2014, I taught marine biology. That year, starfish wasting disease ravaged the species and left them unavailable to experience.

What we protect today defines what future generations will learn from tomorrow.

I first lost my sight (temporarily) at age 7 in a tree-climbing mishap (while dressed as 3 superheroes). That early darkness shaped my path. Now, I design with vision equity in mind—translating science into accessible visuals for all. Vision is personal. Access is essential.

A storyboard diagram for the animation of energy extraction from a glucose molecule. I always pictured it being a bit like a loaf of bread thrown into a sea of waiting fish! Fast and furious with one molecule after another coming by for a quick snack!

Energized or exhausted?
Metabolism matters but is terribly boring for students!
In this storyboard the coenzyme FAD molecules were designed to mimic hang gliders. This animated behavior reinforces the idea that FAD=ENERGY and metabolic ENERGY=FUN!

Reading "The Demon-Haunted World" by Carl Sagan and filled with the awe that permeates the galaxy and searches the the outer and inner limits. When we ask why - amazing things can happen.

This is my retinol lab for vitamin A testing last month. Please note - even on the recommended vitamin A dosing for a woman my age...I am starting to creep up the scale and getting to the higher end after 6 months of daily supplementation. High vitamin A can cause organ damage.

When the air is alive - springtime and the labor of breathing. As an asthmatic and medical artist, this was the image I felt best encapsulated the anxious feelings that accompany the first flowers of spring. Used in a recent dinner talk on asthma. #asthma #sciart #lungs #pulmonology #visualeyesrx

Lower lid margin swelling can be associated w/ anterior blepharitis. This key marker of lower lid expansion results in smoothing of skin texture relative to severity of the progression and used in objective grading by ophthalmologists.

The sun is ever brighter today. The deluge of first flight butterflies and their orange wings brings to mind Pterygium.

pteryx, meaning "wing", and pterygion, meaning "fin".

The common name is "Surfer's Eye" due to the UV exposure.

After a recent deluge of water I traced the track of water down the mountain and discovered a beautiful sediment where the finest fines had been deposited. The shadows of the shrubs above mostly concealed the delicate beauty - but it was there.
