@felix Unfortunately enforcement isn't effective after engineers design unsafe environment.

Canada Way & Burris is a nightmare for pedestrians: a massive 5-lane crossing, complete with a slip lane that encourages fast turns. It’s built for speed, not safety. Pedestrians shouldn’t have to navigate such dangerous infrastructure just to cross the street. We need change. 3/

The conflict created by drivers turning left while pedestrians have the walk signal is a leading cause of pedestrian injuries & deaths. Fully separated signals prevent this conflict & saves lives. This is standard elsewhere in the world & could be implemented almost overnight. 2/

5/ We call on @mikefarnworthbc and the BC government to:

-Reduce default residential speed limits to 30 km/h.
-Support municipalities with funding for speed management infrastructure.
-Prioritize safety over convenience.

Join us in demanding safer streets for all.

4/ Speed doesn’t just increase the severity of crashes—it also increases stopping distances and makes drivers less able to avoid collisions.

Let’s make our neighbourhoods safer for kids walking to school, seniors crossing streets, and everyone in between.

3/ Cities across Canada are taking steps to lower residential speed limits in. Why aren't more BC cities doing so? In part because the province requires municipalities to jump through hoops, lowering speed limits street by street. The province needs to act to protect everyone.

2/ Lowering residential speed limits to 30 km/h reduces the likelihood of fatal crashes, especially for people walking or biking.

At 30 km/h, a pedestrian's risk of death in a collision is just 10%. At 50 km/h, it's 80%. A small change in speed = a huge difference in safety.

How many more people need to be injured or killed before safety improvements are prioritized? Dangerous intersections like Broadway & Victoria demand urgent action, not years of delay. Lives are at stake. Safety--not driver convenience--must become the City's top priority. 4/

Luckily, the City recognized the danger of this intersection and planned a signal a block away at Victoria & 10th, which would help some cyclists avoid it. This improvement was set for completion in 2020. Construction is only now starting—at the tail end of 2024. 3/

This is how the intersection looks: 7 lanes of vehicle traffic on Broadway, a painted bike box constantly blocked by drivers ignoring the stop line, a faded green bike crossing. For cyclists crossing Broadway N to S, it's even worse: a midblock, fully unprotected crossing. 2/
