A shiver crept up El’raena’s spine restlessly, the timeworn arched windows lacking any glass to block the elements, but a gentle pressure around her waist quickly soothed any lingering unease from the night of the werewolf den, the warmth of Ireena’s body against her own ushering in a comfort she wanted to revel in for eternity if she could. Carefully interlacing her own slender fingers with her bunkmate’s, the elf took this moment to curse whatever human blood coursed through her veins that meant she’d never been able to master the trance that came naturally to her ancestors, wondering if that ability would mean she’d be able to enjoy this peace for a few more hours. For now she’d have to settle for the soft breath on the back of her neck coaxing her to sleep, a quiet tranquility washing over her for the first time in what felt like years.
A sudden thud of the vampire lord’s carriage coming to a stop woke El’raena a final time, guilt of a different kind replacing any fleeting feelings of contentment that she desperately tried to preserve. The group had already begun disembarking as she ran her hands over her haggard face before adjusting her dress to join them. She had no right to hang onto those memories as dearly as she did, but hope had been so hard to come by these last two weeks. These last five years. Perhaps something could still be salvaged that was worth holding onto as tightly as she did that dream.
