The off-axis ommatidia are scattering incident light from your point of view.
The 'pseudopupil' spot can be used to "map" the axes of ommatidia in the eye: the ones that are 'black' face the camera.
This is visible in the mantis shrimp (Order Stomatopoda) as 3 distinct zones.
