In 2026, I shall publish the following:

Flip: the second novel in the Kennedy-Meyer crime/romance series (written, proofed, doing layout.)

The Short, Funny Pieces: needs no intro (mostly written)

Clearly Now 2: second novella in series about two extremely old men after the apocalypse (started).

I look at my #book sales since the Book Fest on Nov. 22 and I wonder why I bother marketing/selling from Jan to Nov. 20. Christmas is everything for book sales. Especially paperbacks. #Write from Jan-Nov and then sell, sell, sell in December.

Halfway through my first proofread, on page 130, and I've found about ten items so far, including an incorrect capitalization and an inconsistency. #DraftSeven #editing #WritingLife

Heard Bob & Doug McKenzie's 12 Days of Christmas on the radio this morning. Co-host asked host where it came from - was it related to McKenzie hot dogs or something?

I felt very #old.

My first proof-read inevitably turns into a big ol' line-edit. Always around draft six: the proof-read-turns-into-line-edit draft. #writing #editing #publishing

Back at Bluesky and the other place after a lengthy stay-away. Had to share this great article about the humanities, which argues, counterculturally, that difficult is good: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

Just blew past thirty thousand words in my latest novel, the second in the Kennedy-Meyer series. Grand fun. Very encouraging. But now, back to work work. I hate how it eats into my fiction-writing time!

Rick Davies, gone. There's a piece of your misspent youth. Crime of the Century was a brilliant album.

Last week was a disaster, #writing -wise. Only managed a few hundred words. Hopefully back in form this week. Of late, I've been hitting over 4000 per week, but I'd settle for a solid 2500 this week.

Voyager 1 is almost a light day away from Earth.

Wish I could join it.

Mostly off sick this week, so had to concentrate on work work. Managed to write a few hundred pages of fiction. #writinglife #BookSky 📚💙🖋️

One of my most popular short stories has been published in a book and an anthology and has been read, reviewed, edited and proofed hundreds of times.

There's a missing word in the first paragraph. It's been missing since day one, 20 years ago.

Just noticed today.

1,050 words is such a gaudy amount. And I've done it by 10:30 a.m. It must be crap. I can't #write well that fast. Looks as though I'll be finished #firstdraft by November. I'm dreading my first read-through.

994 words ths morning, and I've hit 20K overall. Amost a third of the way there. I'm quite amazed. This is the start of my third week on a real run. And during the night, I had an inspiration for the ending. The #writing experience doesn't get much better than this. #BookSky 📚💙

I've decided to heck with it - I'm not getting rid of my em dashes. I hate the use of AI in writing as much as anyone, but I love the em dash, and even though many consider it an 'AI tell', it gives my fiction a conversational tone that I like. Tana French uses it, so does John Irving. And me. 📚💙

Another solid week, ending with 1,162 words yesterday and well over 4,000 for the week. Approaching 20K total. Didn't expect to hit this pace till school was back in session. Now believe I can finish a first draft before Christmas.

One full page, about 375 words. One page with six or seven lines of dialogue, about 325 words. One page with a lot of dialogue, under 300 words. One page with scintillating, crackling, snappy dialogue, priceless.

Another type of weird: someone who has thousands of followers, but is only following three. How can you get thousands of followers without following anybody? Even the famous follow a few dozen. Usually, it's the other way: people relentlessly clicking follow in the hope of automatic follow-backs.

This is great. Write well - write TOO well - and everyone thinks you're using generative AI. It's not just em dashes, either. Apparently, the word 'meticulous' is considered an AI tell, along with dozens of other words and turns of phrase. I'm doomed.

721 words on Monday. 778 yesterday. Already 893 today. On a roll. It's a #crime drama, my first time #writing so-called genre fiction. They do tend to hum along once you get going, don't they? Almost at 17K.

The worst is that this is exactly how countries were thinking and planning in the years up to 1918. 'If A attacks C, then D will have no choice but to..., and so we will have to...and then B can be expected to...'

No better joy as a #writer than knowing exactly what you're going to write tomorrow - plot, dialogue, characters, even some great lines. It's all there on the shiny white inside of your skull. Tomorrow, you transcribe. Sweet. dreams. baby.

Wrote 1,003 words yesterday, almost 4,000 for the week, and the novel's at over 12,000. Good, good week. Best of all, none of it worries me. It was solid, will likely require little revision.
