ADVENT Snow falling in continuous tense as if nothing has strayed. And what to do but begin again, decorating this palace for you. Unpacking the tangled fable, choiring all the ways to give and give. The field off-white, its halflight a train carrying would-be joy towards silence. Who would have witnessed the blue horses candling the steps of my body? Or December’s thin bell we pretend is not the toll. Our feet invisible under white —but our prints everywhere on Earth. Vikki C.

Sunday Mornings at the River Poetry Diary 2026. Washington Square, New Years Eve Vikki C. No nightingale, just a cold-pressed peace —its long syllable held through the startled language of crowds. I heard it once in the pastels of an afterlife —some snow-song glittering the giant fir, imported from across the border. A centrepiece of how close we were. Countries, war and missed love aside, we blizzarded soft against its emerald fingers. Luminous lunate baubling the west bough, tipping it towards the lake’s dark meltwater. Its gold sun counterpart hung elsewhere —invisible for a brief lifetime. And you, skirting the roaming light where tree tip thins to a different miracle. Counting down, you turn my eyes up, to the coda. My body reaching higher now — for the clearing in your arms.

Still Life The backyard foxes are lean this winter, and the birds bright. Most days I can't bring myself to do anything but watch the vixen root for something. A run of good days means I'll spend hours rearranging the pantry, as if preparing to paint a Dutch still life. All that's missing is a milkmaid. Or a dead bird. My dress, wrinkled and sleeveless, is nothing like the sky. The foxes grow thinner, and I wonder whether I should feed them, though I don't really know what they eat. Nights stretch and I sleep little, but it's the days, the sun at four o'clock, that are the most difficult-when the movement of clouds appears full of peril. People once drilled holes into other people's skulls, just to let that darkness out.

She (probably) has long braids and wears a white nightshift, her torso partially hidden behind oak branches. She holds a flame in both hands. A black bird sits to her right on the ground. The entire cover is the color palette of night. On Loss When the stopped. When the vanished. Like a dream—the violence of its ending, the absence of narrative. There was no language. In the body, the mind, a mouth. Agape. I tried to write and every word foundered. Agony—I saw it. The dark inside, which I was and was not. The undone undid me. All night the leaving came.

THEY I wondered what had happened to the chords. There was a music, they were following a pattern. It was an intention perhaps. No field but they walk m in it. No place without them, any discretion is useless. They want a time, they have a time, each one in his place, an endless arrival.
