Downballot Democrats didn't fare much better than Cochrane. Democrats lost all but one of Caledonia County's eight House seats despite going 5/8 (nearly 6/8) in 2022, including 3 districts where the GOP didn't even have a candidate in 2022.

Election Day was a rough one for Democrats across Vermont, but perhaps nowhere more so than Caledonia County, where the VTGOP flipped Jane Kitchel's Senate seat and four House seats, leaving Caledonia Democrats with just one Democratic legislator.

Of the six seats that Vermont Democrats lost in the State Senate on election night, perhaps the most surprising came in Addison County, which hadn't elected a Republican Senator since 2000. Incumbent Chris Bray, chair of the Natural Resources Committee, narrowly lost reelection.

The first of many maps of Vermont's 2024 state legislative elections! In the Orange County district, longtime incumbent Mark MacDonald was defeated by businessman and former Topsham selectman Larry Hart. 🧵

Last month I had the pleasure of talking to Chamberlin School 4th graders about Vermont history and the Revolutionary War. They were so curious and asked great questions. Always heartwarming to talk to young(er) VTers who are passionate about critically examining history! (1/2)

However, the jig was up for Meyer in 1960, as popular Governor Robert Stafford challenged him in a presidential year. Meyer slightly outperformed JFK and statewide and Dem gov. nominee Russell Niquette, the "Silver Fox of Winooski" in Southern VT, but was unable to eke out a win.

In 1958, Rep. Winston Prouty ran for U.S. Senate, leaving an open seat. William Meyer, a forester from Rupert, rode a nationwide blue wave to defeat former governor Harold Arthur and became the first (and until 2006, only) Democrat elected to the U.S. House from Vermont. #vtpoli
