and, most important caveat, i’m in no way saying that a piece of work can’t be good analysis AND good journalism/content. but i think considering your end goal and target audience in this context is worth a little time.

this does extend to qual work as well - time watching footage etc. - but feel with where my career is atm i’m not the best to comment on that. i know @jonmackenzie.bsky.social has spoken about this before, though.

as an elaboration on ‘unseen work’ a good example is a data science workflow. most of my time is spent cleaning & organising data, testing assumptions etc. compared to actual modelling and visualising cool things. very important for good analysis; not useful for good engagement.

i’m not in a position to advise how to ‘break into the industry’ or whatever - & am always wary of those who push that advice to others - but i do think that remembering analytics and journalism are closer than ever on social media is helpful to consider what work is worth doing.

not saying one is better than the other, but they have different needs and the audience has different expectations. them merging means a lot of aspiring analysts on here think they should put out regular updates to get mass engagement but that isn’t necessarily true of analysis.
