Oh the glamour of being Circuit Leader. Off to London for the morning. This is way too early for a Saturday.

Tip 14 - enjoy it.

Yeah, okay, I have banged on quite a bit about it being hard work but having my three pupils has been the highlight of my career.

And although you should put a lot into it, you get a lot out of it. 1/4

Tip 13 - set the rules.

If you have expectations of your pupil, make sure they know them.

For example, if you expect your pupil to be in chambers to and from certain times - tell them.

If you want a piece of work done by a certain day, tell them expressly. 1/3

Tip 12 - read the rules.

Make yourself fully aware of all the regulatory requirements for you both.

You need to know what courses are compulsory. You need to know how ethics are assessed.

Make yourself familiar with the regs for the issue of the practising certificate 1/3

Tip 11 - a pupil is not just for Christmas (or even just the first six).

If you have a pupil for the entire 12 months, the second six is not the time for you to sit back and relax. If you take a pupil only for the second six, you do not have the easy half. 1/6

Tip 10 - don’t be that nice.

All three of my former pupils are great great friends now. The important word there is “now”. I am incredibly fond of my pupil master (as he was then) and enjoy a pint with him in his retirement.

But….

Tip 9 - teach the skills.

Slightly repeating myself here but repetition has a pedagogical use (I learnt a new word).

Do not just think that watching you do the job is enough, it isn’t.

Teaching also involves more than just red pen on that advice. 1/3

Tip 8 - yours is not the only way.

Some of the skills of being a barrister are deeply personal. You are not trying to produce a carbon copy of you, you are trying to train a good barrister who deploys their skills. 1/3

Tip 7 for new pupil supervisors.

Prepare your pupil for the realities of practice, including time management.

Give them a piece of work on Monday with a deadline for Friday.

On Thursday, give them another piece of work with a deadline for the next day. 1/3

Tip 6 - fill in the gaps.

Not everything is going to be covered in the first six simply by following you around.

Using the checklist from yesterday’s tips, identify the gaps and fill them in as pupillage progresses. 1/5

Tip 5 - have a plan from day one.

Have a checklist of skills and a checklist of experience. Discuss it with your pupil on day one to see if there is anything that needs adding to it.

Then work your way through it. This provides a structure to pupillage. 1/4

Tips Day 4

Repeat the task and the feedback.

Teaching isn’t always about doing the work once and getting the feedback. Nor is it always the medical “see one teach one do one” approach.

This works particularly well with advocacy.

Again an example from crime. 1/7

Tip 3

Have a work in progress brief. I will take an example from crime as it is my area of work but am sure can be adapted across all disciplines.

Take a set of papers from your upcoming diary. With the DCS you may have to print it out but give them the statements and the exhibits.

Day 2 of tips for supervisors

Yesterday was all about taking it seriously. Before we get into the nitty gritty of how to go about it just a little qualification to the “take it seriously” tip.

Be nice.

Day 1 of 14 days of tips for pupil supervisors -

Take it seriously.

Your pupil has worked very hard to get here. In the vast majority of cases, they will have spent a lot of money to get here.

This is barrister finishing school.
