That is a "stromatolite". Literally that island shore was covered with a thin layer of bacteria. As new bacteria formed on top the old bacteria were killed by the alcoholic waste product. Each successive layer grows flat, creating the banding you see. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stromat...
