Honestly, being toward the end of a PhD when you struggle with mental health issues that force you to take things slow kinda sucks. Funding ran out and it's hard to find work that pays enough to live on, yet doesn't make you too much so I can work on my thesis is really fucking hard. Wish me luck.

Man, I'm trying to write a section in my thesis about taking a somewhat activist stance as a researcher and I think it's probably one of the hardest thing I ever had to write. Definitely going to piss off some positivists, but that's okay.

Question primarily for #historians: I'm basically trying to build a defense of oral history and I would need something on how seeing oral sources as less trustworthy than written ones is rooted in imperial/colonial thought. Anyone know a good source on that or that just mentions that topic?

Currently at a conference in South Africa and it's so challenging, interesting, and generally mindblowing to hear African perspectives, in particular about how colonisers imposed their culture on the continent.

It's making me think on my own experiences as a bilingual person in Quebec 1/4

Trying to refer to people doing history outside of academia without falling into the trap of positioning academics as better than others. I use "trained historian" for academics, but amateur historian somewhat implies a lowrt rank. What do you use? Self-taught, citizen, community historian? #history

All PRESENTATIONS from the conference Cataloging, Archiving and Exhibiting Digital Games (25.-26. Nov 2024 in Prague) are NOW ONLINE. Actually it was one of the biggest gatherings of the game GLAM sector so far 😍 many of them EFGAMP members 🙌

It’s worth emphasizing that the Colombia fight was not about accepting deportations. It was that the Colombian president demanded deportees be treated humanely, and not as props for Trump’s performative cruelty. That simple request for decency was enough for Trump to instigate a trade war.

Just got an email from my uni saying that because of new Microsoft policies, our data storage is down to 100 GN for graduate students (from the previous 1 TB) and 10 GB for undergrads. This means I can no longer use their cloud to save my interview files on OneDrive and benefit from that security.

After a well deserved break from transcribing, I'm back at it. Here's a new great automated transcription mistake I'm sure many people wil enjoy: Stardou Valley. Plus, the interview partner was talking about cozy games.

AI transcription tools are cool, but they flatten everything. The one I'm using has a Canadian French option, which is quite good, but it doesn't register Quebec swears at all and only very few very common expressions/contractions. French in Canada is diverse, so I wonder on what they trained it on.

You know, using AI tools to make transcription much easier is great, especially when it messes up royally. Just got "Marie en toilette" instead of Marie-Antoinette and I don't think I'll ever recover 😂

I'm currently planning a meta-analysis of scholars and scholarship related to Historical Game Studies. If you're interested in participating, feel free to reply/DM me! I'm interested in things like people's scholarly background, affiliation/job title, publishers/journals you usually submit to, etc.

Coordinating a research project on the history of videogames in my province rn, and oral history is a huge part of it. It's really interesting to be the most junior scholar in charge, but also the expert in terms of oral history. Like I know what I'm doing, but also... aaaaAAAAHHHHH!!!! 😅

Currently, most of my time is basically dedicated to transcribing my interviews and will be for the foreseeable future. Even with a round of automated transcription, it takes forever. I love oral history, but fuck do I hate transcribing interviews. Absolutely drains every ounce of energy I have.

Welp, it's done. I officially scrubbed my Twitter account and deactivated it. Hopefully this place won't become another hellhole of the internet.

Since I'm getting an influx of followers because of the recent exodus towards this platform and being included in Historical Game Studies and Game Studies starter packs, I figured I should introduce myself better than what my bio lets me. 1/
