I'm all in favor of doing this and will start using alt text, but with the huge influx of people, I'm pretty sure this won't become the norm 🙁

This is how you use it to bookmark posts.
It doesn't leave an empty comment in the original post, like with the 📌 method.

To bookmark a skeet, click on the ... button and report the post to the Bookmarks labeler. Select any "reason" (I recommend Other) and leave the explanation field blank.
If you go to the bookmarks feed, you'll see all your bookmarked skeets.

I love this feature so much. Only sad part is that it's a bit too techy for regular folk. I see lots of public figures not using this even though they definitely own a domain name :(

Yeah I honestly don't think most people would jump to github to opine, so you'd get very techy-biased feedback, which is NOT great.
It just makes sense to keep you in the app. Maybe as simple as a hashtag that people can search for or use on their posts.
