That being said, it was weird to me that Twitch and Youtube chat were in sub-only mode for the whole weekend. I feel like more people would be watching if they could yap in chat while the event was live.

It was cool to hear about all the old guard who were deep in the competitive scene before I starting playing. Large, open tournaments like this feel like a great way to keep the culture of the game alive.
