Trying to remind (convince?) myself that the 12-16h days we work are indeed work and not vacation, and I’m not wasting time or neglecting my PhD while I’m on Sable, but damn am I ever stressed about everything I have to do when I’m back on the mainland 🙃

Anyone else not able to log into the NSERC online services? It’s been happening since yesterday, keeps saying my password is wrong but I try to reset it and get this, just blank 🫠

I haven’t been keeping up with the Iditarod much this year, but very disappointed to hear @quincemountain.bsky.social was withdrawn today despite having no intention to scratch #uglydogs

Very excited to finally share this! All of my remote fieldwork has taught me a lot, but there’s just something different about Sable

Our remote fieldwork taught us how to band together as scientists
Three early-career researchers thrown together on Sable Island, a treeless island in the North Atlantic, think others can learn from their experiences.

Nothing fills me with rage quite like trying to do anything in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. All I want to do is rearrange some images for my lecture on Friday but I’m about to throw my laptop out a window 🙃

If anyone has advice on what kind of medical professional to see for TMJ/trigeminal nerve pain, I’m all ears. Intermittent pain over the past couple months has become much more regular, to the point where eating solid foods is extremely painful 😩

The first paper from my PhD is out in Parasitology! Using DNA metabarcoding, I show patterns of parasite infection in Sable Island horses!

It's open access, so go check it out!

Yesterday a few of us met on campus at 6am to necropsy a collared moose, which was a 3.5h drive then 2km bushwhack away, but the lab truck had other plans & started overheating less than an hour outside Saskatoon… turns out that saved us from a loooong waste of a day

Press release from a former labmate’s most recent paper, congrats Alex! Find me in the field pictures 🤠

When you were born in Whapmagoostui in December but raised in Montreal/Sherbrooke, winter in Saskatoon hits hard & fast. Less than half an hour outside this afternoon and he ran in and curled up tight in bed!

I guess I should reintroduce myself! I’m a PhD candidate on the @sihorses.bsky.social project at @usask.bsky.social, and did my MSc on the Ram Mountain bighorn sheep project at @usherbrooke.bsky.social Currently working on density-dependent carry-over effects on SI horse life history traits

I guess I should maybe post something to introduce myself, so:

Hi! I’m Victoria, I did my MSc at USherbrooke on the Ram Mountain bighorn sheep, and am now a PhD student at USask working on the Sable Island feral horses! And I’m terrible at keeping up with social media
