What all this tells me is SILs effectively hid the needs of people with complex care requirements from society, from politicians and policy makers. No one who has spent significant time in them would ever think you could just close them

The level of profound specialist care at an individual level provided in SILs is unknowable to ppl who have never spent time in them. You can’t close them without an alternative

Thanks again for your work Rick. The cruelty of going after someone for their disability supports because Ben Fordham had a rant. Has Rebecca been talking to Ita?

Driving from Melbourne to Gold Coast in the 80s. No motel booking. Dubbo all booked out due to festival. Ended up in Gilgandra above the pub on band night. Lizard in the one shared bath. Mattresses that folded in on themselves due to dodgy bedsprings. Good times!

Have been there many years ago. A place of immense suffering and bravery. Remembering PoWs scooping infected skin with spoons to stop the rot and stay alive. Glad you are keeping their stories alive.

Thank you for all the work you do Louise and for not forgetting about these brave, brave people and giving their stories a voice long after others have moved on.

This is like reading my life! I have 3 kiddos with GRIA2 deletion (4q32.1). All 3 different (uni grad to severely disabled). All much loved. And yes we are experts. Academic study done only a few years ago. I google GRIA2 every few years to see anything new! Best of luck to you. Holly is beautiful.

Yes they were very strong at the time. We were too naive to think that you can stand up for yourself and then national attention is placed on you because someone wants to write a book about “feminist overreach” We were too idealistic that all the doors would just open in the early 1990s.

Having known the unasked subject of the first stone and heard the whole story firsthand at the time, I have never understood the praise. A uni student was groped by a person in authority in her own living space and HG used this trauma to write a book and was upset she didn’t get an interview?
