Blood might have the funniest end level screen ever

Did you hear that? Hear what? Is anyone hearing this? Probably not. Either way, part 3 of the Steam Next Games to Add to Your Backlog coming atcha! This is the last one so I can finally stop playing demos and do my chores thank god

Hey, wouldn't you know, its part two of the the Steam Demopalooza Report Card. Reiterating all demos are still online, so it might be a good thing to fill you weekend, if you are one of those weirdos with actual free time.

Well hello again. It's been a while. My own compulsions compelled me to play a truly egregious amount of demos in the last Steam FOMOfest. So much that I will have to split this into parts; also, all of them are still online, so not reason not to check them if you are inclined. So part one, lets go!

And we're back with the only consistent content on this meandering, purposeless micro-blogging account; reviewing demos from the last Steam FOMO Fest. Most of them are still available, so you know the drill.

still shocks me that Barkley Shut Up and Jam 2 will never be finished and still manages to be the funniest video game ever made
April 20, 2024 at 11:23 PM
Here's some impressions from demos I played last Steam Fest; yeah I know that whole shebang ended like last week, but due to local festivities I spent the previous weeks in the thrall of various inebriating substances and only sobered up now (also most of these demos are still available so whatever)

Wizard of Legend by Contingent99. A challenging, blindingly-fast action roguelike that perfectly encapsulates the issues, good and bad, that the careless "roguelikefication" of all game types brings; a demanding, excessive experience that is nevertheless compelling.

Ok, so to start 2024 here's a bunch of stuff I played last year that I did not end up writing about.

Starting the year right

Mercenary Kings by Tribute Games. Similarly to the studio Scott Pilgrim game (which I also reviewed btw), this game takes a established arcade mainstay, in this case the run'n'gun, and injects it with a liberal dose of contemporary RPG fluff, to some divisive results.

Shadow Warrior 2 by Flying Wild Hog. A sequel to an early bird of the boomer shooter craze, this is a exceedingly satisfying FPS that dabbles in the looter-shooter pond, while keeping a narrative tone that oscillates between vulgarity and surprisingly erudite world building
December 11, 2023 at 5:46 PM
Super Meat Boy Forever by Team Meat. A long-gestating quasi-sequel to one of the foundational indie greats, this one pivots the masocore-zen of the original in a strangely limiting new direction, but also no less sharply-designed and sometimes even fascinating.
November 22, 2023 at 11:05 PM
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 by Tose. A wildly popular spinoff of the ur-jrpg series, this is a monster catcher/battler whose overt simplicity and wonderful character designs belies a mountain of depth, as anyone who has ever being hopelessly sucked in any DQ (or DQ adjacent) can attest.

Desktop Dungeons by QCF Design. A surprisingly mathy puzzle game in the guise of a dungeon crawler, this is a clever, albeit sometimes very challenging game, that can serve as a quickfire nightcap play, or something that you can sink hundreds of hours in.
October 19, 2023 at 9:59 PM
Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits by Namco. This is perfectly-formed arcade-puzzle design, that combines the urgency and elegance of arcade games with a wonderful visual presentation and a steep, rewarding high skill ceiling.
October 13, 2023 at 5:50 PM
Starcraft: Mass Recall by the Mass Recall team. This a mod for SC2 that adapts the entirety of the first game, including Brood War and all sorts of extra missions. It's both a showcase for the importance of fangames, and why that passion can make them sometimes unaccessible.

Heretic by Raven Software. I've been on a kick of playing Doom engine games, and this is probably one of the earliest and most successful of the bunch. It translates the satanic sci-fi setting of id's title to something closer to the fantasy RPGs that inspired it the first place.

Megaman Star Force by Capcom Production Studio 2. A continuation of the prolific (and recently revived) Battle Network series, this one falls short in the same ways that series did, despite some interesting changes and improvements to its shonen anime/action card battle formula.

Gato Roboto by Doinksoft. A lean and mean metroidlike that does a whole lot with very little, and does not dilute its essence with pointless collectibles or rpg stats, instead being defined entirety by its sinewy, loopy level design and satisfying gameplay.
