There was a time when the public didn't know much about trans people. It was actually better that way. They went about their business and nobody minded. Once activists drew attention to it, the right-wing media sensationalised it and it went downhill from there.
It’s crazy to think this county was more tolerant of the differences among us 50 years ago than it is today.

I wholeheartedly believe the key problem is that we are looking at identity groups as if they are types of paragon or villain. In reality abuse happens because
1. The abuser wants to abuse someone.
2. The abuser has a belief, often not unreasonably, the abuse will work and they will get away with it
