~The Mirna River Valley~
Once upon a time, as legend goes, giants and humans inhabited Istria. As parts of the land were arid, the ruler of the giants, Ban Dragonja, took pity on the humans and ploughed three river beds. One of these was Mirna (meaning Peaceful or Calm), named after his wife.

Three years after Howard Pyle created (but never finished) his painting The Mermaid, the Croatian author Vladimir Nazor published his connection of tales inspired by local lore. One of the most haunting stories in that collection is Halugica.
