one of my fav books ive read this year. resmaa menakem is a somatic therapist meaning his work centers in the body. he describes the somatic experience of racial trauma in america from the perspectives of white ppl, black ppl, and the police. a historically expansive handbook w/ exercises

v helpful if you're a creative with blockages and unwilling to create! it's helped me find a routine of journaling every day which has given me more brainspace for creative thoughts over anxious ones. overlook some of the spiritual content if it doesn't work for you, but very practically helpful

the nut of my nuts.... i loved this. full of so many fascinating essays about the social construction of the monster from different ethnic, sexual, and bodily perspectives. i haven't read it all but the monster theses by jeffrey cohen are sooo provocative if youre interested in monsters

we all know this book and bell hooks rule lol. but a very moving read for me, especially the positing of "love as a verb" instead of a state of being. this encourages accountability because one cannot say they are doing something out of love if their actions don't support that. quick, important read

intense and beautifully written! story of a dagara tribesman displaced by colonialism who returns to his tribe later to receive rites of initiation. he walks away with the perspective of both colonially inflicted teachings and dagara wisdom. his story is incredible and i dont want to spoil too much!

offered a lot of valuable perspective in applying acceptance to every day struggles that one would not think they have agency over. however at a lot of points it smacked of privilege (brach's sabbaticals to buddhist retreats) and felt derivative of a lot of older texts authored by buddhist elders

essential reading for american revolutionaries. it shifts between assata's childhood and life incarcerated. full of humor and rage and firsthand descriptions of injustice behind the wall of prison, as well as a plethora of CIA fuckshit and government acts of racist violence. beautiful and raw

exploring the core wound most humans feel, loneliness even in company, a profound unnamable grief. this book was like a hug every time i opened it up. very resonant for outcasts, and inclusive of physically imposed disbelonging like diaspora and exile. feels like tending to an old wound.
