Something missing from most of the coverage is that (a) it's inference (queries) that takes up the bulk of energy costs, not training and that (b) Deepseek was trained on the outputs of another LLM, whose energy costs are somehow universally shrugged off as irrelevant by these people

"The electricity consumption of data centres is proportional to their computational power," said analysts at Rystad, an energy consultancy. "If what they claim is true, total energy consumption could be significantly lower." Analysts at Citi said that if the numbers proved to be accurate, it would have a significant impact on companies providing energy infrastructure. Companies that supply data centres have benefited from robust growth expectations. “More computationally efficient AI could bring these trends into question," they wrote.
