A game jam is a great excuse to try something new, your scope is limited by the jam which takes some pressure off.

Give Godot a try, it feels pretty darn dev friendly right out of the box.

I used Krita for the first time recently, to hand paying some clouds for a particle emitter.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole and David Revoys brush pack (free CC 0 license) was frequently recommended and they’re great.
