It's really sad. Michigan used to have a ton of passenger rail, but it's been so gutted that if you want to travel by train from Ann Arbor to Grand Rapids it's a 16 hour ordeal taking you to Chicago then back to Michigan.
My home town had 3 passenger rail lines, now it has none.

As OP pointed out China has phenomenal passenger rail systems. China is larger than the US in landmass.

These are choices that were made. Not inevitabilities because, "the US is just too big!"
Most regular travel is done within cities or small regions. The fact that there's thousands of miles between NYC and LA or any other arbitrary distances you can think of are irrelevant for 99.999999% of trips.
