Beginning with the genocide of the Herero and Nama in Namibia from 1904 to 1908 and continuing through the Holocaust against Europe’s Jews from 1941 to 1945, Germany has been responsible for two of the most devastating episodes of racialized genocidal violence of the past century. Over the past two years, it has extended that legacy by providing sustained military, political, and legal support to Israel as it carries out the destruction and erasure of Palestinians. The deal follows a $3.5 billion arms agreement signed two years ago, making the two contracts Israel’s largest arms sales ever, worth more than $6.6 billion combined.
