This sci-fi horror novel is book 1 in a planned series, which I didn't realize when I first picked it up. Thankfully it wraps up a complete arc, even if some plot threads are left open for the sequel.

Agreed! This reminded me of a book I read with a popular title comp. Many reviewers were disappointed because they felt the book was A.) a rip-off of the title comp, or B.) wasn't enough like the comp.
Truly a disservice to what I thought was an interesting book on its own merits.
