If you're happy Harvard stood up for academic freedom today: write your alma mater(s) if they haven't done the same and ask them to do the same. Make this your one action you take today. And share that you did it below!

If you are upset about what's going on but aren't sure what to do: start by calling your reps. This app 👇 makes it easy.

Standing up to authority is a muscle. If you haven't had to exercise it before, this is a great first step. I promise DOING one thing will make you feel better & more capable.
Okay, I cannot recommend 5calls.org enough. Enter your address and it will find all your reps (federal and state). AND give you a list of issues to call about AND which reps to call about each of them AND a little script for each, in case it's helpful. They have an app, too.
5 Calls
Spend 5 minutes. Make 5 calls. Make your voice heard.

"We are the safest major city in America because we are safe for everyone. We have accomplished so much not in spite of our immigrants, but because of them." Love this from Boston's Mayor Wu.

Got a printer? You can start fighting fascism. Here's a thread of things you can print and distribute. 👇

I promise doing something--even this--feels better than raging silently. And maybe it'll show you that standing up is possible and open you up to more things you can do.

I’m in Iowa for the semester. Which is flying by. I head home mid-May! I’m being my most authentic self & encouraging my students to do the same. Iowa’s legislature literally legislated hate this week & yet over 2500 protestors showed up on Thursday, some of my students, because showing up matters.

Today a student starting singing “I Believe [I Can Fly.]” Another student interrupted, “we don’t sing that song anymore because he did bad things.” Another student, “we can separate the art from the artist.” Which was when I said, “We absolutely cannot. & those bad things were sex trafficking FFS.”

Unsubscribing from every single political donation email/text request is how I’m coping with the end times. (TBH I thought I did this after the election but damn they got to me again.)

Why is “mantling” so damn slow and “dismantling” a fucking wild fire? (I know “mantle” isn’t the antonym to “dismantle”. Thanks.)

People are understandably feeling scared as Trump unleashes his torrent of attacks on vulnerable populations. But some in the grassroots are fighting back, piece by piece. @rebeccaburns.bsky.social burns and I documented one such effort in Chicago disrupting Trump’s mass deportation plans.

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce.

Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.

I am now obsessed with Wheelchair Rugby thanks to watching the 2024 Paralympic Games. Might have cried in Q4 of the Japan vs USA game.
