The outdoor shower was not so happy with our pack of presence in combination with freezing temperatures...

Last time at our cabin in Oppdal for a while, before the big move to Bayreuth. Hopefully we will be back next winter at least, then with snow 😀

Two weeks ago I organised the first Summer school in Model-based Multivariate analysis for community ecologists.

We spent a week in Hjerkinn (NO), teaching 26 international participants about model-based multivariate analysis. Together with Jenni Niku, Pekka Korhonen, Francis Hui and Audun Rugstad.

There might be examples where model-based ordination performs worse than classical methods, but I haven't found them yet. Of course that does not mean that classical methods do poorly in all cases; they often do their job quite well.

Model-based ordination is the way.

In almost every presentation on model-based ordination I attach these two figures. It shows a re-analysis of (one of) the infamous dataset(s) by Minchin (1987) who concluded NMDS to be the best ordination method. But, #GLLVMs do much better, even if the model is misspecified.

Excited that this has arrived! One of the first accessible texts for ecologists that want to apply #GLLVMs

@bbolker.bsky.social I have a random probit model, and #glmmTMB fits much slower than #gllvm (see below with VA, LA is about half the time of glmmTMB). Any idea what's going on?

The description for the #GLLVM workshop at #OikosNorway is now on the conference website.

If your student wants to learn how to use the best multivariate analysis methods in community ecology, you should probably send them our way.

@methodsinecoevol.bsky.social do you support sending this kind of spam? Am I now to receive this email every time I cite an article that you have published?
