Behavioral neuroscientist investigating environmental contributors to autism risk using the prairie vole.
Today is a day for writing. For thinking. For creating. For pulling together a thousand spun threads and stitching patches into a quilt. And in moments, watching the wild geese outside my window, inside their own umwelt, reminding me of my place in the family of things. m.youtube.com/watch?v=A9PR...

Scientists will not be able to say with absolute certainty what causes autism after only 5 months. Only a politician can do that.

Dear trainee friends (et al.),

'Tis true that parts of the sky are falling & this is distracting. However, if you happen to have done A THING (paper, etc.), we want to support you. Don't hold back from letting us know. So we can learn and 👏.

We're still here for the science.

Sincerely,

Everyone

Science joke: I’m about to watch a PhD defense about mechanisms of action of PACAP. If it’s not pituitary adenylate cyclase activation, someone is sure going to have egg on their face.

A new study in the British Journal of Psychiatry reports that life expectancy for adults with ADHD is significantly lower, 7-9 years on average. One proposed mechanism is, essentially, not going to the doctor.

I submitted a second round of peer review comments for a manuscript, and Reviewer 2 is criticizing things *I* said in *my* first round comments! Oh, it’s on, Reviewer 2.

I learned a very valuable lesson from my students in the past couple weeks: if you treat them with empathy and respect, they notice.

Stats question for scientists of the skies:
My strategy for years has been to use omnibus tests (ANOVA) as my primary analysis, and to use *uncorrected* post hoc t-tests to *describe* the differences detected by the primary analysis.

Recently, a colleague challenged this approach. Your thoughts?

Congratulations to Dr. Nilanjana Saferin, my first ever PhD student to defend her dissertation!! So, obviously, I conferred her with the traditional doctoral sword. Like you do.

The newest academic job data are out! For the best chance at a job offer:
- Don’t be old
- Don’t be first generation educated
- Don’t be male

… It’s a miracle I ever got a position.
