Comparative civil-military relations, defense manufacturing, political violence, electoral politics, and foreign policy. Regional foci on South Asia and Latin America, but also the "global south."
Time for another photo of Peron from his 1973-1974 presidency.

There is a Civil-Military disjuncture in Colombia over Venezuela that's becoming increasingly clear. E.g., 5 Colombian soldiers were kidnapped by ELN insurgents on 9 November in the Arauca Department bordering Venezuela.

Friday evening of a frustrating week means I turn to the spirit of an indomitable people.

A lot of regional support for U.S. intervention in Venezuela for regime change according to this AtlasIntel-Bloomberg poll. It's not surprising if you know about the refugee crisis (7.9/28 million), narco-backing (to EU not U.S.), support for FARC and ELN, etc..

Just received an epic photo of a couple of ancestors--probably great granduncles--looking like a couple of dweebs while hunting tigers. How's that even possible? lol

Venezuela has a ton of Russian equipment that Ukraine needs right now. The U.S. should make a sweetheart deal with a few army guys there to exile Maduro without a conflict. Business is business! Who knows? Maybe they are Republicans.

Publicly announcing covert ops by the CIA in Venezuela signals to Maduro and Co.. Threat of regime decapitation may encourage him to demit power and cronies to defect. Covert and overt ops by our 3 letter agencies are old hat there.

I don't like it because when it comes to covert ops I believe...

I think that many of us don't know the extent of the Venezuelan refugee crisis. It is destabilizing a bunch of regional countries. 1/n

One of the poshest venues in Chicago with an escalator where most Political Scientists want to be seen. We know the dress code is strictly khakis and sports coats with polyster shirts and clearance neck ties. That bar serves famous Political Scientists: just ask the Political Scientists there.

May Ma Durga bless you with health and happiness. My family's Durga Puja at our Annapurna Temple continues from 1812: We are blessed!

Okay, I have no idea whether this is what is happening. If it's some aide trying to get ahead of the news or he knows something.

Then there are the neat little pubs. No television in sight. Simply conversation and a great collection of scotch and beers.

It was perhaps the best weekend excursion I have ever made.

The National Gallery was stupendous not only for its collection of well known painters, but also local artists who were in conversation with the latest in European ideas.

The magnificent park by it is not pictured.

The Scottish National Museum's collection of industrial objects was fantastic!

Sadly, little attention was paid to Scottish businesses role in industrializing Bengal in the 1800s-1900s. There was some textile related material, however. 2/4

This summer, I visited my Dad's favorite city Edinburgh and his alma mater RCS. My nephew just graduated from Loreto College in nearby Musselburgh.

My family made its fortunes from the 1870s-1970s in a nearby city called Dundee, supplying jute.

Edinburgh didn't disappoint: I fell in love. 1/4

I have stopped listening to the innumerable rehashed Doors collections released since the 2000s (1990s?). But this one is solid.

I want more of these 45 RPM versions released from other bands and artists, be they Singles or from EPs, because they are distinct from the better known album versions.
