Learned a new mushroom! I've been trying to find these delicious Cortinarius caperatuses from Alaska for a couple of years now, but with no luck. Now, my mother, our mushroom expert, showed it to me on a familiar trail, and now I see them everywhere! They are unmistakable :) #fungi #AKforaging

I never thought that giving a public history talk would feel radical. But I might have talked about a historical case of immigration that has a storyline of the US govt robbing these expert immigrants off some key rights when their expertise was no longer needed. (Cont.) #publichistory #AlaskanSámi

Cultural exchange: I made a Finnish "vihta" to use as a whisk in a steambath. My Dena'ina hosts would use something similar, but not made of birch.

What I did yesterday: Found an excellent patch of hay and spent a calm evening making a himmeli. It was good to step away from the doomscrolling and remember the beauty, ingenuity, and humanity of our kind. (Ch'inan gheli, Dena’ina Ełnena!)

There have been several cases of damage to communication cables under the Baltic Sea. They have been linked to international containerships "forgetting" to pull the anchor. Not saying that's what happened on AK waters, but it's something to watch out for.

Calling the bill that ends civil rights protections to trans folks "common sense" is a strategy to make it seem completely reasonable that trans women in Iowa will have to carry maze and go home to pee. How could any rational person ever think otherwise?
