(Epidemiologist on his hobby account) Influenza loves mutating, and has several ways to do so. It’s best not to think of it as a single disease, but as a closely related group.
Single cases like this from intensive contact - like backyard poultry flocks - are relatively common and often dead ends.

This was named for Barnum Hall, at Tufts University (which was in turn named for P.T. Barnum, yes, that P.T. Barnum). The former home of the Tufts Biology department, where I both got my degree, and where I started playing the game a good couple decades ago.
