#Bookvember 20

The Nightmare before Kissmas by Sara Raasch. Very much a gay romance, very much not my usual genre. But also, very well written and engaging. I read it on a friend's recommendation.

#writevember I have not been sharing this daily, only doing the weekly prompt, but hey; hit a milestone tonight.

Such Sweet Sorrow has officially hit the midpoint today.

Stephen King is one of the most prolific horror writers in the modern zeitgeist. This one is still rated fairly high from what I can see, but I hated it. The characters weren't engaging, there wasn't much horror to the story even though the premise was interesting. Not my fav.

This is very much Elena's energy. She's super positive and feisty about it.

#Bookvember Lost by Gregory Maguire.

Most people think about Wicked and the rest of that series when it comes to his work. Lost was a good read. The pacing was a bit slow at points, but the creepy factor was high. (I need to reread it, but I remember enjoying it)

#Writevember This last week was okay until Thursday, I lost some of my lead. Haven't worked yet today — it's 6:41 AM — but I'm still ahead for the month.

I'm usually a pantser, but this month I started with a rough Save the Cat style outline! Most of my prep was just jotting down story beats.

I know I've already talked about T. Kingfisher a few times, but hey. A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher. The main character is funny, engaging, and the horror is done so very well. The horror is familial epectations, just as much as eldritch/botanical abomination. 5/5

#pretendpanel I haven't worked yet today (It's 6:30 AM for me) but I'm about 60% done with my challenge word count, and I'd say about maybe 45-50% done with my draft. The last two days have been a slog (got some unfortunate news) but I'm slowly picking back up. Hoping to soar ahead this next week.

Excerpt is from Such Sweet Sorrow, my grief horror that I'm currently in the middle of first-drafting. (So, it may be a bit crunchy.)

Not bad for 60 seconds. This is Winnie, she's a very greedy person with a vanity issue. Pretty, but rotten inside type.

This was a hard one. I don't think I've come across a 100% mirror. But, I think I've got to name What Moves The Dead by T. Kingfisher.

Alex Easton is masc but also gender is complicated for kan. Ka is also headstrong, kind, and logical, and I'd like to think I embody those things.

I have a lot.

William (orange) and Willow (white) are the cats in the first picture.
Charlie's the black cat in the second.
I also have five snakes and like 25 fish, though the fish are more my husband's. I won't post pics of the snakes since they're a common phobia.

This one, for a few reasons -

- It's art history
- She'd think of it as a dig to her ex
- It's a Shakespeare reference (the piece is of Ophelia from Hamlet) and she loves Shakespeare.

Blood over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang, though it's high fantasy, was an interesting exploration of refugee characters and privilege. (It was also very, very dark.)

Not to toot my own horn, but this looks pretty damn nice.

(ignore the dark spot, I had to wipe away some glue and it's still wet.)

Convincing you to read my novel by the first sentence. Share yours if you want!

This is from mine and @lyfeisgr8.bsky.social 's novel Lemon Balm, a dark contemporary fantasy with nonbinary, ace-spec leads. Also the first of a series.

@juliangreystoke.bsky.social 's 2nd Floor

Julian's an ace author, and this novella is a cozy horror based on tarot. It's got compelling characters, and the horror is just the right amount of build for something that you can read without having nightmares. Check it out!

Don't Let The Forest In by CG Drews.

First off, the prose is haunting, at points. I didn't know what to expect, going into this book, but I came out of it feeling scrubbed raw. Secondly, I think the MC's anxiety is portrayed really well.

Witchmark by C.L. Polk. It's a rich, intensive world that has a bit of a futuristic but historical feel to it, and the magic is believable and intense. It's also really interesting that healing powers are considered lower/ less than, in this world. (It's also queer!)

Ooooh, this one is hard. I'm having a hard time choosing. Here's a few, one from each of my more finished projects.

I have a small library in my attic, and some of my art books in a built-in cabinet in my office.

#Bookvember Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite, now known as William Joseph Martin. The storytelling is so dark and rich. His prose is fantastic, and draws you in, and doesn't let go until the end. I need to do another read, but I've reread this one multiple times. There's some unique takes on vamps, too.
