Reflections from J. Sullivan on why the U.S. didn't help Ukraine more assertively.

The U.S. could have provided the weapons needed to push russia out in the autumn of 2022, when the conditions were most favorable, but chose to delay.

Op-ed from a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine

Trump admin's policy - pressuring Ukraine, but not russia - is clearly visible to outsiders as well, but it's great that she has spoken out

resharing here

as the message on being more strategic in communication is applicable more broadly

My comment on this.

"Neutral" (optimistic) scenario is the one where U.S. doesn't actively help russia.

Norway 💪 💛

This is very substantial and makes Norway one of the top (if not the top) supporters this year.

Other European countries should follow their lead.

Intro to the DNI's annual threat assessment has a Mearsheimer-y 'realist' twist.

Did they have to add '...and security'?

Also, adding the qualifier 'perceived (...) encroachment' doesn't change the fact that it's an interpretation.

Did others notice?

Great essay by H. Farrell and A. Newman - authors of 'Weaponized Interdependence' -

on the dangers posed by DOGE's control of the payment and personnel systems

Yes.

Musk also reads and aligns with a lot of russian fascists, from Dugin to Medvedev

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets high on ketamine, sees some ru propaganda, gets inspired by it and acts on it, all while thinking that he's leading some new-right anti-woke crusade

WSJ now reports that it's "read only" access. It would be important for other outlets to confirm this.

It's still very sensitive, but a critical distinction.

What they are doing is an extreme malpractice, if not outright illegal

Yes. Also, the fact that it's "full access" is a huge malpractice, if not outright illegal
February 1, 2025 at 9:50 PM
And it seems like it's not just "read" access (which would be sufficient to do an audit), but "full" access

Let's not lose sight of a bigger picture

And have empathy

My take on Biden's presidency.

I wish that he were more assertive on russia, but I can still understand where his decisions were coming from.

In particular, his administration (intel agencies) did believe that if Ukraine defeats ru, Putin might gamble and go nuclear as a last resort.

From WSJ on Tulsi Gabbard's confirmation meetings so far.

And her lack of understanding of the role is not even the main problem...

If she will be confirmed it will show that Republican senators are cowards.

January 13, 1991.

Russian troops against unarmed Lithuanians who had gathered near key institutions to defend our recently reestablished independence.

Thankfully, we won.
