Federal agents can only use force when it is "objectively necessary to stop an immediate threat of the person causing serious bodily injury or death to another person." There must be two separate warnings given before force is used, Ellis rules. ‪ Those warnings must be given "at a sound level where the targeted individuals can reasonably hear it," Ellis says. Ellis orders that agents wear "conspicuous identification" in two separate places and wear and activate body-worn cameras while engaging in enforcement actions. Ellis is done. The preliminary injunction has been entered. Ellis grants plaintiff's request to certify the lawsuit as a class action, which means it applies to more than just the named plaintiffs and includes all nonviolent protestors as well as those engaged in news gathering & religious practice.

I was reading a book of fables to my kids earlier today for homeschool & I found myself a little shook at this one. (It's not exactly the story of the scorpion & the frog that the tyrant told at so many rallies, but still.)

The Frogs hid themselves among the reeds and grasses, thinking the new king to be some fearful giant. But they soon discovered how tame and peaceable King Log was. In a short time the younger Frogs were using him for a diving platform, while the older Frogs made him a meeting place, where they complained loudly to Jupiter about the government. To teach the Frogs a lesson the ruler of the gods now sent a Crane to be king of Frogland. The Crane proved to be a very different sort of king from old King Log. He gobbled up the poor Frogs right and left and they soon saw what fools they had been. In mournful croaks they begged Jupiter to take away the cruel tyrant before they should all be destroyed. "How now!" cried Jupiter. "Are you not yet content? You have what you asked for and so you have only yourselves to blame for your misfortunes." This is interesting context to go alongside Zach Bryan releasing that anti-ICE song (source: religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i... ).
DHS, meanwhile, has also invoked faith — especially Christianity — to promote its actions. The agency has produced promotional videos that overlay Scripture on top of images of ICE agents conducting raids. And on Tuesday, the DHS X feed posted a new video with religious themes. As the song “Revival” by recording artist Zach Bryan plays, footage rolls of a recent ICE raid on a Chicago apartment building, an event Amnesty International condemned as an “attack on human rights.” The video then shifts to images of federal agents and local police pushing back protesters in front of the Broadview facility.

Weird to see people I know IRL hold this dude up as such a great Christian, with his history of saying racist things (some examples here from @jamellebouie.net's article). Guess it's good to have it pointed out for me that I underestimate the power of White Christian Nationalism among people I like.
And then there is Kirk’s vision for America, which wasn’t one of peace and pluralism but white nationalism and the denigration of Americans deemed unworthy of and unfit for equal citizenship. On his podcast, Kirk called on authorities to create a “citizen force” on the border to protect “white demographics” from “the invasion of the country.” He embraced the rhetoric of white pride and warned of “a great replacement” of rural white Americans. “The great replacement strategy, which is well underway every single day in our southern border, is a strategy to replace white rural America with something different,” he said last year. “You believe in God, country, family, faith, and freedom, and they won’t stop until you and your children and your children’s children are eliminated.” Kirk also targeted Black Americans for contempt. “Prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people — that’s a fact,” he said in 2023. Kirk was preoccupied with the idea of “Black crime,” and on the last episode of his show before he was killed, he devoted a segment to “the ever-increasing amount of Black crime,” telling his audience, falsely, that “one in 22 Black men will be a murderer in their lifetime” and that “by age of 23, half of all Black males have been arrested and not enough of them have been arrested.” Kirk told his listeners that Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson of the Supreme Court “is what your country looks like on critical race theory,” that former Vice President Kamala Harris was “the jive speaking spokesperson of equity,” and that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. “was awful.” “I have a very, very radical view on this, but I can defend it, and I’ve thought about it,” Kirk said at a 2023 event. “We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s.”

Partisanship is also at a peak on this metric, with 76% of Republicans saying they are satisfied with the direction of the country versus less than 1% of Democrats. The resulting 76-point gap is the highest Gallup has recorded on this measure, although not substantially different from a 75-point gap in May and 74 points in March and July. Before this year, the parties had differed by more than 70 points on satisfaction only once, in October 2004 before that year’s presidential election. Independents’ mood today is closer to Democrats’ than Republicans’, with 25% saying they are satisfied. Republicans were essentially as dissatisfied with the country’s direction in July 2024 as Democrats are today. At that time, 1% of Republicans were satisfied and 97% dissatisfied. Stanford economists: AI has been killing jobs, especially for young workers. At-risk positions included "software developers, receptionists, translators & customer service representatives."

Using records from paycheck processor ADP, the economists were able to get a granular view of how generative AI has affected the labor market. The data includes detailed information on workers’ ages and occupations, making it far more comprehensive than the survey of households the Labor Department uses for its monthly employment report. The Stanford economists first looked at areas where AI can automate many of the tasks workers perform, and therefore potentially replace them. Those include jobs such as software developers, receptionists, translators and customer service representatives. Their finding: Overall employment in those categories has softened since late 2022 relative to other occupations, with the weakness concentrated among younger workers. “After late 2022 and early 2023 you start seeing that their employment has really gone in a different direction than other workers,” Brynjolfsson said. Among software developers aged 22 to 25, for example, the head count was nearly 20% lower this July versus its late 2022 peak. These are daunting obstacles for the large number of students earning bachelor’s degrees in computer science in recent years. For workers aged 26 to 30 head count was close to flat, but among older workers head count continued to grow. Other factors could be hitting those computer-science jobs, including a general slump in employment at technology companies or pandemic-related education disruptions. But the data suggest such possibilities can’t explain away the AI effect on other types of jobs. Head counts among customer service representatives—a category that, unlike software development, generally doesn’t require a college education—followed a similar pattern.

Many have expressed disappointment and even anger that I would mention the harm that Dobson's work did to so many. They say I shouldn't have said anything today. Here's why it's actually VITAL that we mention that harm right away: Many, many people suffered terribly directly as a result of Focus on the Family's teachings. Their parents were taught to punish them for normal child development, and they developed anxious or avoidant attachment which has affected them their whole life; women were told by Focus on the Family counselors they could not divorce for abuse; people are estranged from their parents now because their parents have been sucked into an authoritarian right wing theology as a direct result of Dobson combining religion and politics. These people have deep, deep wounds. They were harmed. If all they see today are people saying, "What a life James Dobson lived for God!", how will they feel? I want them to know they are seen. That we remember them and think of them. That they matter, and their pain matters. Articles praising Dobson and praising his legacy will be everywhere over the next few weeks, and that will be very painful for those who have been hurt. I want them to know that they are safe here, that we see them, and that they matter. If that seems crass to you--if it's more important to speak only good things about a man with such a mixed legacy who has hurt so many--then may I ask, where your loyalty lies? Remember that Jesus left the 99 to go after the 1. Why do you want so badly to protect those in power, rather than going after those who have been hurt? Just something to think about.
