Manic Spreadsheeter (ist? izer?). Likes old anime dubs, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and that weird sticky goo that holds magazine inserts in place. Frequently wrong.

Slowly working on the world’s most pointless game of spot the difference. Have at least 3 more unique copies inbound.

…on another note, if anybody is in the market for far too many copies of Ghost in the Shell on DVD once I’m done documenting these, I may know a guy

The PS5 is also just really frustrating to use and lacking in features. With the exception of 4K upscaling, it’s a worse DVD/BD player than my PS3 from 2006.

The remote is also awful for disc playback, and doesn’t have audio track or next/previous chapter buttons, which drives me nuts.

Interestingly, WNET Thirteen was actually on the production committee for Phoenix, so they threw a chunk of change into a series they never aired.

According to MB, their involvement in the US release ended after 1 recording session. So weird.

Birdy the Mighty mentioned, today is a good day.

Shame it’s in an article about how you can’t watch it, but I’m still going to use this as a springboard to say that everyone should watch Birdy the Mighty Decode if they can. Yes, even you.

(The 90’s OVA’s not half bad either)

All games must converge on Generic Anime Look™ because that’s the lowest risk option, and it allows jamming your characters into the gacha crossover of the month with little effort.

Random discovery of the day: Apparently back in 2006 Nielsen tracked anime dvd sales, and the top 10 list has a few surprises.

My favorite anime, Jerry Maguire.

So how many times do I need to watch the new Netflix batch of Detective Conan episodes on loop to juice the streaming numbers so the impossible happens and TMS/Discotek give us another Blu-ray.

(The Tubi dubbed episodes are already gone. I don’t want the series to slip away again.)

Slowly going insane as I try and catalog the different variations of the 1998 Ghost in the Shell DVD (UPC 780063552929). I'm up to 6 variants, and I'm pretty sure there's at least one or two more...

Thankfully, they're all dirt cheap, so I've ordered a few to get good scans of.

Demi Moore is a Dirty Pair fan, apparently.

(From the recent Haruka Takachiho interview for the Kickstarter set)

They also put out the 1-episode Sanctuary OVA on VHS around the same time.

Update from Justin Sevakis on the official Discotek subreddit regarding communication about titles going OOP

If I’m correct with my timeline, this actually beat the JVC to the market by a couple of months, and may have been the very first consumer product with an active-matrix LCD, 5 whole inches in this case

The machine is quite portable, and can be run from a battery. Even has a little TV tuner and antenna!

This is the euro model. A slightly different version, the VC-LT50(A) was sold in the US and Japan. It adds Hifi Audio, but drops the TV tuner and multi format capabilities.

Huh, apparently Discotek used to do fancy limited editions with bundled soundtracks.

…or at least they did once, with Electric Dragon 80,000V in 2006.

For comparison, here’s the standalone releases. It’s not big, but the AnimEigo logo is present on the spine and back of the cases.

Random discovery:

The twin pack of AnimEigo’s Growing Up with Hello Kitty DVDs actually blocks out their logo for some reason. I’m not sure if it’s intentional or not, but it means there’s zero company logos at all until you open the set. Weird.

The later 2003 DVD would be done through Liberty International, leaving this 1999 one as something of a relic of some long-gone DVD publisher, forgotten by time.

Do you know who MoonGlow or MR Inc were? Or anything about the final incarnation of Century Video? I’d love to hear from you!
November 2, 2025 at 4:29 AM
MoonGlow’s company website was never archived (or even mentioned on an archived site), I can’t find any really relevant trademarks, and the only other dvd from them I can find has a different logo, for some sort of “C-Ice” company
November 2, 2025 at 4:27 AM
As the DVD era approached, Century (or what was left of them after a bankruptcy) would work with a number of different companies to get their titles out on disc, such as Liberty International and Warner Bros. But for Super Grand Prix, they went companies I’d never heard of: MoonGlow DVDs and MR Inc.
November 2, 2025 at 4:27 AM
Note that Century Video Corporation is entirely unrelated to The Century Group, who were the company that bought out Peregrine and were responsible for titles like Macross and Locke the Superman.
November 2, 2025 at 4:27 AM
First some background: some time around 1983, the anime Arrow Emblem: Grand Prix no Taka was dubbed into English as a compilation film by American Video Factory for Century Video Corporation, the same company behind Magnos the Robot. A number of VHS releases would follow.
November 2, 2025 at 4:27 AM
It’s low-stakes anime mystery time again! Tonight’s topic: who’s really responsible for the 1999 DVD of Super Grand Prix? And why does the cover look like that?
November 2, 2025 at 4:27 AM
Well, there we have it. Official confirmation from Crunchyroll that they will not be fixing any further issues on the Dirty Pair set… but only via email from someone who kept asking, no proper Kickstarter update admitting they’re just not including 3+ stretch goals backers explicitly paid for.
