A thoughtful article about the gerontocracy wing of the party. Their position has become their identity and they don't know how to let go.
But we have to keep having this conversation in public, because as we're now learning about President Biden, we can't count on it happening internally, nor can we expect any individual to give up power easily. Even when the alternative is so much better (being an elder statesman with time to spend with family, friends, and mentoring the up-and-coming leaders sounds really nice!), too many will cling to the only identity they've had: "politician." The stakes are too high to indulge this or stay comfortable. The leaders that got us to this point have neither the stomach nor the skills to get us to the next one; it's time for them to go.

The legislation makes it a felony for a volunteer to collect more than 25 signatures for a campaign from people outside their family without getting approval from the state, which requires background checks and training. At a single community event, individual volunteers collect far more signatures than that cap, according to the League’s co-president Cecile Scoon, and groups will have to overhaul training and outreach tactics. The League will teach volunteers to comply with the law, but the looming threats “will chill people from wanting to participate as signature gatherers or even as signatories,” Scoon warned.

Attendees of Bondi’s session told Filter that she appeared to confuse stimulants with benzodiazepines, describing students “using Xanax to study.” And that she repeatedly claimed the majority of the illicit fentanyl in the US is brought in by migrants crossing the southern border. Yet there was still clapping and whooping coming from the audience. The harm of this type of rhetoric isn’t that it’s partisan, but that it’s rife with misinformation, whether intentionally or out of ignorance. While the summit has had this problem in previous years, this year it’s a frighteningly dystopian indication of what the future may hold as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and other relevant federal agencies are dismantled.

The net effect of this was that legislators became less interested in compromise, less interested in delivering material benefits to the mass of voters, and more interested in playing to their own base. Despite the fact that the parties have remained closely balanced in Congressional seats, this hasn't translated into greater competition to deliver material results. Since so many legislators remain in uncompetitive seats come what may, they see little pressure to compromise with the opposition—or their own party, for that matter. Each caucus is split between those who have to care about general elections and those who only have to care about primaries; even when the party achieves a narrow majority, it is difficult to put together an actual voting majority.
