turns out they dont actually use utf8, but raw unicode where 0xFC is a valid character for the letter ü instead of 0xC3BC like a functioning text encoding. cool. im going to bed now.

whats weird is everywhere else (browser, computer, apps, etc) is using japanese font for kanji, so the only solution i can think of is wrapping the text in cards with <p lang="jp>
