While I can’t say for sure that growing up in Salem had much to do with my becoming an archaeologist, nowadays, every trip home reminds me to think of the past and how to reconcile my gratitude for the kindness of this place towards my family with its complex history of harm and colonization.

but very little about the Indigenous people of the region for whom the state is named. We learned about Salem’s prominent role in the trade between America and Asia, but barely a hint of its complicity in the trans-Atlantic trade of enslaved African peoples.
