discussing the mess that is auckland's urban design, transport and politics

Glad to see the City Rail Link bringing in a lot of new development,

such as Eden Park's plan to include 1500 new car parks.

Because, fuck trains and buses amirite?

🚨 Breaking News 🚨

Auckland Transport and the Eastern Busway Alliance have discovered an unknown effect that's jamming traffic on the new Rā Hihi intersection:

they have dubbed it "higher traffic growth than expected"

but experts say that it's something called "induced demand" or whatever.

Simeon Brown is now big sad

because drivers have to slow down, and buses and cyclists are prioritised.

So his solution to solve car traffic on Pakūranga road today, is to remove a not-yet constructed cycleway

and, quite literally, another lane for cars.

but but but socialism bad?

There's an indescribable level that's above "fucked"

when even MSD prefers non-austerity options to reduce young jobseeker numbers.

Out of all of the magnificent pedestrian bridges that could be referred...

@colossalorder.fi has managed to immortalise the "temporary" Wynyard Crossing bridge.

"Truckers waiting for hours due to storm damage or while fatal road crashes are investigated are asking if there is a better way."

If only there was a better way...

A more efficient way to move tons of freight with less people...

A more climate resilient, cost effective way...

I remember reading an opinion during one of UoA's "Complex Conversations" projects (likely Auckland at 15)

that asked: "why don't we tear up the railways and replace trains with buses? No one really uses them anyway!"

Anyway, unrelated, the SH1 is fucked due to there being no trains.

And here's the project's proposed outcomes and benefits:

I wish this is a joke investment case, but welcome to 2025
October 20, 2025 at 3:39 AM
Oh btw, the "East West Link" has been resurrected.

NZTA is pushing an investment case to spend $3.7-4.1 billion to get <1% back in economics benefits ($49.5m) each year.

Who the fuck is still asking for this?

William Vickrey, an economist touted as the father of congestion pricing, wrote an essay days prior to his death about the "15 fatal fallacies of financial fundamentalism".

Despite being written in 1996, it may as well be from a 'woke' economist 30 years later.

Rā Hihi, the flyover on top of Pakūranga plaza, will have both of its lanes opened tomorrow.

It promises to cut congestion by up to 40%, and would benefit the Eastern Busway "built underneath".

There's just one small problem... underneath it...

The BSA receives a complaint on a certain political podcast for "unacceptable racist comments"

and Winston Peters, and one of the fake unions, are freaking out on losing their freedom to spew racist bullshit.

Exhibit A, B, C, and D

for why this argument isn't bound to reality

Welcome back to Simeon Brown making another shitty argument.

"They need their teacher in front of them for that very last minute revision."

is frankly not an effective rebuttal against teachers - who are striking after years of being overworked, understaffed, and underpaid from teaching students...

Good to hear that Mayor re-elect Wayne Brown is still considering surface-level light rain in Auckland.
