First rehearsal for our staged reading of Othello
Still thinking about Othello.
I was expecting Othello to seem much more of an outsider but most of that is driven by Iago, who makes himself an outsider by being an evil fuck who breaks all social contracts. I caught myself in a nervous laugh occasionally because I couldn't believe Iago kept winning. It's so on target for now

For the current & future school board & city council members here: this is why playgrounds & parks are important.

Remember little kids falling out of their seats at school? Not enough play.

Humans need food and play all through primary school and beyond. Kids need it even to be able to school.
We actually don't talk enough about how children's neurodevelopment is a requirement for readiness to learn, particularly for math 🥰 and reading 🙌🏾.

It looks like hanging/hand walking the bars at the park, swinging, and Miss Mary Mack! Big body and cross-body movements. Patterns.

Life needs play!

"By play, I mean a dynamic in which tightly coupled means/ends relations are loosened such that something new can emerge... Play is ubiquitous in the living world. It makes room for something new, for growth, for flourishing.."

Today in legendary Upstart moments: recording delay due to Canadian sunset and accompanying solar storm. Good for unit morale and cohesion.

All great musicians — no, all great artists are students of their artform. Knowing this is important, and the very best respect the history and pay homage.

I think about who had to be taught this, because the people who created and enjoyed this music would already know it.

Love the photo though.

Business of theatre day.
For our Othello staged reading, we are going with a G.I. Jane take on Iago. The actress playing her wrote her master's thesis on regendering Shakespeare so I'm letting her play. Now have the difficult business of switching pronouns and nouns (husband) where Iago is the referent. Fun with Shakespeare

So many artists do this.

Thinking about Glenn Ligon (quotes on textiles, neon, etc).

Even choreographer Bill T. Jones who created a narrator for one of his pieces, Curriculum II, who quotes text from Sylvia Wynter and other theoriststhat informed the work. Dance piece was about race and tech.
Anyone have any experience with stitching citations onto textiles, or otherwise making citations into physical representations??
