When French explorers saw the American Bison they called them “le boeuf” which is why buffalo is a common name. The Lakota called them tatanka, but bison is derived from Greek meaning ox-like. The buffalo in Asia can be distinguished from bison by having no hump. #hockeycards

Yellow bananas did not exist 200 years ago, until the Cavendish banana that we eat today was cultivated. In the mid-1800s the popular variety was the Gros Michel which had a high concentration of isoamyl acetate which is what artificial banana flavour comes from, #hockeycards

Screws were the last of the simple machines to be invented. The Archimedes screw was one of the first hydraulic machines around 234 BC. PL Robertson invented his screw in 1906, while Henry Philips invented his in 1932, a debate as to superior that still rages. #hockeycards

There are many geese idioms, like being a silly goose or having goosebumps. A wild goose chase is a 16th-century horse race, where the lead rider could change direction at will, and the other horses had to follow precisely, similar to how geese fly in formation. #hockeycards
