School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health. To enhance human health by exploring causes and mechanisms of cardiovascular disease
Their research outputs span from laboratory science, through clinical trials, to policy guidelines, but at the heart of every project is working with stroke survivors and their care-partners to help them in the recovery journey.

Terry leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers that work to understand, and treat, these ‘hidden’ symptoms of stroke. The team are interested in the memory and thinking problems that accompany stroke, and their research seeks to bring together the worlds of stroke and dementia research.

However, stroke survivors consistently tell us that the most important symptoms to them are things like fatigue, brain fog, and low mood.

Our research group is working to change that.
We’re developing faster ways to detect stroke type and uncover hidden health issues. For those who can’t get clot-busting drugs or surgery, we’re exploring new treatments that both reduce brain injury and boost recovery.

It felt like a daunting task to get the message out to that many people and organise an event so large but we had great attendance and feedback which was really encouraging!

What is your biggest achievement while doing your PhD?

My biggest achievement so far is probably in my role as a PGR rep. We decided to organise a cross-school event for all of the PGR students within MVLS to share their research in an informal way, with pizza of course!

We all know that lab work has a tendency to take longer than expected so it’s easy to feel de-railed when things go wrong but it’s always good to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and then it doesn’t feel so bad!

What advice would you give yourself before you started your PhD?

I think the advice I’d give myself (or anyone at the start of a PhD!) is to have realistic expectations of how much you can get done in a week!

What does a typical week look like for you?

A typical week will vary based on what experiments I have running but will normally have a mix of long whole-day experiments, shorter jobs to do in the lab like looking after cells, and desk work in the office such as analysing data or writing.

Specifically, I am interested in whether small signalling particles called extracellular vesicles (or EVs) could be having a role in causing some of this damage, initially focusing on the blood vessels and heart.

Can you please explain your project?

My PhD project is looking at the impacts of stroke on other organs of the body. We know that as well as brain injury, stroke survivors can have complications in a number of other organs and are interested in exploring some of these effects further.
