I love seeing Kestrels. Their ability to keep their heads perfectly still whilst hovering is always impressive.

Easy to see how the cormorant inspired the liver birds in Liverpool. Supposedly if the statues fly away then the Mersey will flood the whole of Liverpool. I'd be more concerned by weeping angels if statues came to life.

Carrion crows are highly intelligent, omnivorous birds that can potentially love more than 20 years. They have been observed leaving nuts on the road, waiting for cars to crack them open when they drive over them!

A single squirrel can bury up to 3000 nuts in preparation for winter. Some squirrels will only use one or two places to bury their hoard so it's probably good they have good memories for where they buried it!

Best thing about cormorants is their lack of waterproof feathers despite being a diving bird!
No waterproofing means deeper dives and swimming efficiency underwater. They have to dry out every so often, which is why you can usually see them perched high with outstretched wings.

Coming into winter, one of my favourite things happens - birds become increasingly round and look like puffballs.
If you get birds in your garden in the winter then make sure to keep some food for them (hanging feeders are better), and stones in a bird bath can stop the water freezing!

Great Egrets were hunted heavily for feathered hats. The founding of many conservation groups were a result of fashions impact on wildlife, such as the RSPB in 1889 by Emily Williamson!

Essentially a fluffy lollipop, long tailed tits sometimes eat by hanging off a branch with one foot, and gripping their food in the other to eat upside down (in this case a peanut).

It's estimated that blue tits spend about 85% of daylight hours in autumn and winter foraging for food. Which is unsurprising given they need to eat almost their own body weight in food every day to make sure they have enough energy to survive the cold nights.

Garden snails are the most common snail species in the UK and usually live for between 2 and 5 years, however in captivity some have lived for up to 20 years!

The American Mink was first introduced to the UK in 1929 by fur farmers, with populations later released from fur farms by activists in the 1950s. Currently various conservation projects are attempting to bring some species balance by reintroducing otters and water voles.

Bees are such wonderful little creatures, sadly in the UK their numbers have declined by a third in the last decade. Without them we would have a much harder time producing food, also they are cute.

Snail spotting, or snorting if you prefer, is best done after it rains. Sometimes overlooked, snails are immensely important as they break down decaying matter to recycle nutrients back into the soil.

Red Squirrels have been in the UK for around 10,000 years but are now unfortunately one of, if not the most endangered species in the country. 75% of the population is found in Scotland, and many projects across the UK to restore them.

Great Tits are one of the most common garden birds in the UK and Europe. In the winter they often join with Blue Tits in roaming flocks to scour for food.

Ever wondered why geese sometimes fly upside down? It's called whiffling. By turning upside down they slow down rapidly so it can be useful for a quick landing!
