Buuut if you were doing it that way I don't think you'd end up with these rows of 2x2 pixels that break with seemingly no rhyme or reason
The way that the larger clumps are decimated into smaller clumps of pixels is such an AI pixel art-ism but idk man it's shoddy work either way

To be fair, these larger sprites are often animated, so it's just as likely that someone went in and drew with a pixel brush instead of doing it dot by dot, which would explain why it looks like that (still distracting to look at though)

It's a shame because without the shaders the sprites themselves can look great but with them it just disguises all of the juiciest details
And I say *can* look great because uh the larger sprites are not good and have all of the typical signs of AI generated pixel art

HD-2D has actually gotten less distinct over time. Octopath Traveler had pixelesque environments but later games don't even bother. I'm not sure who it's for. I guess people who like pixel art but not that much?
